This was the 8th Annual Trends Day event hosted by the Arizona ULI. This was my first experience at the Trends Day conference. My overall impression, the information provided was fascinating but not necessarily to the level of detail that was at the CCIM|IREM Economic Forecast that I attended in January 2013.
After 9 hours and several cups of coffee and a few sodas, I wanted to provide my recap to you.
Opening Panel was the Education Panel. On the Panel was Duke Reiter, SVP of ASU Foundation; Craig Barrett, Retired CEO of Intel and Chairman of Arizona Ready Council; Lattie Coor, CEO of Center for the Future of AZ; Hilary Pennington, Director of Education, Postsecondary Success and Special Initiatives, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Some of the takeaways:
Arizona has high expectations and has put education on the top of the agenda for priorities.
Arizona has the largest population of young people in the Nation
Every country in the world wants the same thing – Great educational opportunities for our children
Arizona is mediocre in the K-12 system in the USA
What are some the solutions:
There is no shortage of studies. There are studies dating back to 1958 on this issue of how to fix.
Need to fix the Political Will to get behind the issue (One panelist made the comment that we can’t point the finger at the Politicians because they represent us and we are part of the Political Will)
There is no correlation between money spent and results
Need to put in measurements (AMES Testing was commented as being a joke and that we should look at Massachusetts NAPES Testing)
People and families will only move to Arizona going forward as long as there is a quality school for their kids. Education will be the key to Economic Development in the future.
Overall, this was a great panel to discuss an issue that should be at the top of the agenda when it comes to our competitive advantage going forward. If you are there, what did you takeaway?
